spindrift

What is "spindrift?"

You will observe spindrift along the seashore on a day when big rollers are breaking near the shore and the wind is blowing off the land toward the sea.

The offshore wind tosses the breaking tops of the surf high up and back in a beautiful display like a long inverted waterfall; this is spindrift. On a very windy, bright day the effect is extraordinary.

Those who enjoy the beauty of the ocean will recognize spindrift as a distinctive characteristic of coastal areas like the town where I live - Pacifica, California, just south of San Francisco.

Here is a video (366K, QuickTime format) of spindrift being created in the waves near the Pacifica pier.
